How to Treat Brittle Nails

For a number of women, having long nails is a life-long ambition. This is not always an easy task, especially if you suffer from brittle nails. Luckily there are a number of treatments to help you out.

Tips on Preventing and Treating Brittle Nails

Nail Polish Removers – Women who love long nails also tend to love colourful nails too. There is nothing wrong with this. The problem with nail-painting is the remover people often buy. If your nail polish remover contains acetone stop using it immediately.

Water – If you have a coffee and cola addiction you really should give it up if you want beautiful nails. Start drinking plenty of water or tea instead as dehydration is one of the biggest reasons for brittle nails. Also rub moisturizer or olive oil on your nails.

Thyroid – Brittle nails can be an indicator of other health problems such as hypothyroidism. Have a look to see if you have any other symptoms of hypothyroidism and consult your doctor for further advice.

Calcium – Just like bones, your nails need calcium to be strong and healthy. Include more foods in your diet that contain calcium such as dairy products and broccoli.

Biotin – Initially it was discovered that biotin made horses’ hooves stronger. When humans started taking it the result was also stronger nails. If you have particularly brittle nails then taking 2.5 mg per day in the form of a supplement will help.

Protein – Protein is made up of amino acids which are said to be the “building blocks” of our body. They are absolutely essential to our health because they create our cells and repair tissues. You need protein for a healthy body in general – not just for healthy nails.

Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) – The average Western diet is severely short in EFAs because we don’t eat enough fish and eat too many fried foods instead. By taking Evening Primrose Oil and Fish Oil you’ll be able to help eliminate your brittle nails plus have smooth skin and shiny healthy hair.

Because brittle nails are often an indicator of poor nutrition you should really work on improving your overall diet. Other nutrients which are linked to nail health include:- zinc, iron, vitamin A, vitamin E and selenium. Take this as a warning sign that you need to improve your diet by eating more salads, EFAs and drink more water. If you have other health problems consult your doctor for further advice.
