Is Cosmetic Surgery Really Worth It?

Although many of us might look at something like cheap rhinoplasty in Houston as being something vain, cosmetic surgery isn’t just about making people look perfect.  Sure, there are plenty of people who feel inadequate and will blame the way they look.

If they got turned down for that job they might blame their crooked nose or if they got dumped by their boyfriend then they might feel it’s all because of their double chin.  Sometimes they have real reason to feel terrible about their appearance whilst other times people are simply obsessing about a defect that isn’t really a problem.

However, remember that not all cosmetic surgery is for the vain.  It came about to help people who were born with serious defects or involved in an accident.  You can’t really blame these people for wanting surgery under these circumstances.

For instance, there’s a disease called Noma which causes the tissues in the face to become destroyed.  Not only can it look horrific but it can cause real practical problems for the sufferers such as problems eating and talking.  Unfortunately Noma tends to affect the poorest people because it is often brought on by malnutrition or poor drinking water.

Because many African countries are still so poor, Noma is a condition that still affects many people today.  There was a TV documentary just recently which followed a team of British surgeons who travelled to Ethiopia to treat children with the disease.  Although the surgery didn’t produce Hollywood results, it was successful in helping the children deal with the practical problems of eating and talking.

One of the surgeons commented that he finds it increasingly more difficult to go back home to operate on patients who really don’t have much wrong with them at all.

So if you’re wondering whether to undergo cosmetic surgery, perhaps you will want to take a step back and realize that you are probably in a far better position that these poor children in Africa suffering from Noma.
